United Airlines has solidified its commitment to fleet growth and sustainability by entering into a significant lease agreement with SMBC Aviation Capital.
The deal involves twenty Airbus A321neo aircraft, which will be delivered to United starting in 2026. These aircraft are part of United’s broader fleet modernization plan, designed to enhance operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
SMBC Aviation Capital, a prominent global aircraft leasing company, has been a strategic partner to United for many years.
20 Aircraft Lease Deal
The recent lease agreement represents a continuation of this successful collaboration. This deal complements a previously announced sale and leaseback transaction involving 20 Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft, further strengthening the relationship between the two companies.
Michael Leskinen, United’s Chief Financial Officer, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating that these leases align with the airline’s efforts to optimize its balance sheet and increase return on capital.
He emphasized the importance of SMBC’s continued support and partnership in achieving United’s financial goals.
The Move to Airbus A321neo
The grounding of the 737 MAX following two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019 led to significant disruptions for airlines that had invested heavily in this aircraft type.
United Airlines was one of the largest operators of the 737 MAX. Like others in the industry, the grounding had a substantial impact on its operations.
As a result, United began to explore alternative options to replace the grounded 737 MAX. The Airbus A321neo emerged as a compelling choice due to its fuel efficiency, passenger capacity, and overall performance.
United placed significant orders for A321neo aircraft, which helped to fill the void left by the grounded 737 MAX. This strategic move allowed the airline to continue its fleet growth and modernization plans.
Barry Flannery, Chief Commercial Officer at SMBC Aviation Capital, highlighted the environmental benefits of the Airbus A321neo aircraft. These fuel-efficient planes will enable United to expand its fleet while minimizing its carbon footprint.
Flannery underscored the long-standing relationship between SMBC and United and expressed confidence in their continued collaboration. As United Airlines continues to invest in its fleet, the airline is poised to enhance its operations and better serve its customers.
