IndiGo Secures Wet Lease Extension for Turkish Airlines Boeing 777s

Posted on June 2, 2025

India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) granted IndiGo, the country’s largest airline, a final three-month extension to operate two Boeing 777-300ER aircraft wet-leased from Turkish Airlines.

This decision extends the lease until August 31, 2025, offering temporary relief for IndiGo’s Delhi–Istanbul and Mumbai–Istanbul routes.

However, the DGCA rejected IndiGo’s request for a six-month extension, signaling a firm stance influenced by geopolitical tensions and India’s push for aviation self-reliance.

This article explores the context, implications, and future steps for IndiGo as it navigates this critical transition.

Background of the Wet Lease Agreement

IndiGo, known for its low-cost carrier model, introduced wide-body Boeing 777 aircraft on its India–Istanbul routes in 2023. This aimed to meet growing demand for international travel.

These aircraft, wet-leased from Turkish Airlines, include crew, maintenance, and insurance. The ACMI arrangement allowed IndiGo to operate long-haul flights without owning wide-body aircraft.

The arrangement filled a gap in IndiGo’s fleet, primarily composed of fuel-efficient Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft.

However, the lease, initially set to expire on May 31, 2025, faced scrutiny due to geopolitical concerns. This has arisen due to Turkey’s support for Pakistan, which has strained India–Turkey relations.

DGCA’s Decision and Conditions

The DGCA’s approval for a three-month extension came with a clear directive: IndiGo must terminate the Turkish Airlines lease by August 31, 2025, with no further extensions permitted.

This decision reflects India’s broader aviation policy emphasizing self-reliance and reducing dependence on foreign carriers for critical operations.

The DGCA granted the extension to prevent immediate disruptions to IndiGo’s Istanbul routes, which are vital for business and leisure travelers. However, the regulator’s rejection of a longer extension underscores the need for IndiGo to find alternative solutions swiftly.

IndiGo’s Response and Strategic Options

CEO of IndiGo, Pieter Elbers, acknowledged the DGCA’s ruling and affirmed the airline’s commitment to compliance. Elbers emphasized that IndiGo is actively exploring alternatives to maintain smooth operations.

One option is transitioning to smaller Airbus A321neo aircraft, which are part of IndiGo’s existing fleet. While fuel-efficient, these narrow-body planes have less capacity and range than the Boeing 777, potentially requiring route adjustments or additional flights.

Another possibility is wet-leasing wide-body aircraft from other partners, such as Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners from Norse Atlantic Airways, which could offer similar capacity with modern efficiency.

Implications for IndiGo and Indian Aviation

The DGCA’s decision highlights the delicate balance between operational needs and national priorities.

For IndiGo, the end of the Turkish Airlines lease poses logistical challenges but also an opportunity to innovate. The airline’s ability to adapt will be crucial to maintaining its dominance in India’s aviation market, where it holds over 60% of domestic passenger share.

For the broader industry, this move aligns with India’s goal of bolstering domestic carriers and reducing reliance on foreign aviation resources, especially amid geopolitical sensitivities.

Looking Ahead

As August 31 approaches, IndiGo must act decisively to ensure continuity for its Istanbul routes. The airline’s exploration of alternative aircraft and partnerships will test its operational agility.

Meanwhile, passengers can expect uninterrupted service in the short term, but changes in aircraft type or flight schedules may loom.

This development underscores the evolving dynamics of India’s aviation sector, where strategic decisions are shaped by both market demands and national interests.
