Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) reported a significant increase in passenger traffic and flight movements in February 2024 compared to the same month last year.
This positive trend is attributed to a combination of factors, including the Chinese New Year holiday period and a recovering travel industry.
Passenger Boom Fueled by Holidays
HKIA handled a substantial 4.2 million passengers in February, representing a remarkable 96.5% year-on-year increase.
Flight movements also saw a significant rise of 69.3%, reaching 27,615. This growth can be partly attributed to the surge in travel during the Chinese New Year holidays, which fell between February 7th and 18th.
During this peak period, the airport averaged over 150,000 passengers and 960 flight movements daily.
Notably, February 18th witnessed the busiest day with 160,600 passengers passing through HKIA, while February 7th saw the most aircraft movements at 1,029.
Cargo Traffic Uplift
Cargo volume at HKIA also experienced positive growth in February 2024, with a year-on-year increase of 11.7% to 324,000 tonnes.
This growth was primarily driven by a 30% rise in exports compared to February 2023. Key trading regions like North America, Europe, and the Middle East saw the most significant increases in cargo traffic.
Positive Start to 2024
Looking at the first two months of 2024, HKIA’s performance remains impressive. Passenger traffic reached 8.4 million, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 98.2%.
Flight movements grew by 73.3% to 56,370, while cargo throughput rose by 21.3% to 701,000 tonnes.
Year-on-Year Growth and New Route Launch
On a 12-month rolling basis ending February 2024, passenger volume reached 44 million, a staggering 349.2% increase compared to the previous year.
Flight movements and cargo throughput also saw significant year-on-year growth of 98.7% and 8.2%, reaching 299,925 and 4.5 million tonnes, respectively.
Furthermore, HK Express recently launched a new flight route connecting HKIA with Beijing Daxing International Airport. This signals continued growth and connectivity for the airport.
This new route strengthens the economic and cultural ties between Hong Kong and Beijing, solidifying HKIA’s role as a vital gateway between Mainland China and the rest of the world.
