One Cargo Aircraft Every 7 Minutes
The scale of operations is impressive: A Lufthansa Cargo aircraft lands every seven minutes somewhere in the world, orchestrating a complex dance of global commerce.
Over 1,000 trucks operate daily under Lufthansa Cargo flight numbers, while five organs for transplant take to the skies each day, racing against time to save lives.
The company proudly operates the world’s largest dedicated fleet of Boeing 777 freighters, with 18 of these modern widebody aircraft. The dedicated cargo aircraft are capable of carrying the heaviest loads among twin-engine freighters. T
hey cover routes up to 9,000 kilometers – equivalent to flying from Frankfurt to Hong Kong. Their comprehensive network serves roughly 300 destinations across more than 100 countries, connecting businesses and communities worldwide.
2024 Standout Achievements
2024 brought several remarkable transport achievements that showcased the airline’s capabilities. One standout was a 65-ton automotive industry shipment from Brazil to Sweden via Frankfurt.
This was among the heaviest cargo uplifts ever handled by Lufthansa Cargo, requiring meticulous planning and multiple flights.
Another notable transport involved a General Electric aircraft turbine weighing 12 tons and measuring over 5 meters in length.
This delicate operation in November 2024 required precise coordination by specialized loadmasters, who secured the multi-million dollar engine with about 50 tension belts. This prepared the consignment for its journey from Beijing to Frankfurt, ensuring its safe arrival down to the millimeter.
Live Cargo
The Lufthansa Cargo Animal Lounge demonstrated extraordinary versatility in 2024, hosting over 80 million animals. Among these were 2,800 horses, 14,000 pets, and 200 zoo animals, each requiring specialized care and handling.
Some special passengers included two Siberian tigers bound for release in Kazakhstan under WWF supervision. It also saw a pair of pygmy hippos traveling from Madrid to Mumbai in custom-designed wooden enclosures. A rare red panda was transported in a specially designed climate-controlled chamber with a two-level resting area.
Fine Art Transportation
Art transportation demanded particular expertise and innovative solutions. The hip hop exhibition “THE CULTURE” traveled from Chicago to Frankfurt in March 2024, comprising 62 packages weighing 14,640 kg.
This shipment utilized sustainable aviation fuel to reduce environmental impact, combining cultural preservation with environmental responsibility.
Later in August, the prestigious Berggruen collection, featuring works by Picasso, Klee, Giacometti, and Matisse, required five separate flights to transport 91 artworks in 42 specialized climate-controlled containers.
Each piece was handled with extreme care in the purpose-built ARTcube facility at the Lufthansa Cargo Center in Frankfurt.
Humanitarian Operations
Humanitarian efforts also marked the year with significant impact. In November 2024, Lufthansa Cargo delivered 100,000 Mpox vaccines to Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, demonstrating their crucial role in global health initiatives.
This mission involved seamless collaboration between multiple organizations including EU Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid, the German Embassy in Brussels, Brussels Airport, Swissport, and World Courier.
