On June 8, 2025, a twin-engine Cessna 414 plunged into the Pacific Ocean five miles off San Diego’s Point Loma coast, killing all six people on board.
The light aircraft, which took off from San Diego International Airport at around 12:30 p.m., was headed to Phoenix, Arizona. The devastating accident has left the community in mourning and authorities searching for answers.
San Diego Cessna C414 Crash
The Cessna 414, a 1970 model with tail number N414BA, carried one pilot and five passengers. Shortly after takeoff, the pilot reported distress, struggling to maintain the plane’s heading and altitude.
Air traffic control instructed the pilot to climb to 4,000 feet, but the aircraft reportedly was struggling to climb. The aircraft then made two turns toward the shore before heading back out to sea, issuing multiple “Mayday” calls.
Flight data shows that the aircraft had entered a descending left turn, losing approximately 1900 feet in 13 seconds. The aircraft then climbed, with erratic changes in altitude and direction. Radar contact was lost soon after.
A local surfer, Tyson Wislofsky, witnessed the crash. He described the light aircraft emerging briefly from clouds, descending sharply, and striking the water nose-first at high speed.
The impact reportedly created a large splash, followed by an eerie silence. The crash occurred less than 10 minutes after the flight’s departure. The wreckage sank into 200-foot-deep waters, complicating recovery efforts.
Search and Recovery Efforts
The U.S. Coast Guard, San Diego Harbor Police, Lifeguards, and Customs and Border Protection quickly launched a search operation for the Cessna 414 crash aircraft and its occupants.
Helicopters, boats, and a Coast Guard cutter scoured the area overnight but found only a debris field. No survivors were located. The depth of the ocean and strong currents posed significant challenges for recovery teams.
Investigation Underway
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are investigating the Cessna crash.
The FAA reported the incident occurred “under unknown circumstances,” and while preliminary findings are expected soon, a comprehensive report may take months.
The aircraft was reportedly owned by private individuals, though previously linked to Optimal Health Systems in Pima, Arizona, which sold it in June 2023.
This tragedy marks the second fatal Cessna crash in San Diego within weeks. On May 22, 2025, a Cessna 550 crashed into a neighborhood, also claiming six lives.
The recurrence of such incidents has raised concerns about small aircraft safety in the region. Residents and local officials are calling for thorough investigations to prevent future losses.

The NTSB will now analyze Cessna crash aircraft flight data, maintenance records, and pilot communications to determine the cause. Weather conditions, mechanical failure, or pilot error are among the possibilities being explored. For now, the focus remains on supporting the victims’ families and recovering the wreckage.
