Cathay Pacific, a leading Hong Kong-based airline, has placed an order for 14 more Boeing 777-9 passenger jets. This increases its total commitment to 35 of the advanced widebody aircraft.
This significant order positions Cathay Pacific as the largest operator of the 777-9 in the Asia-Pacific region, reinforcing its role as a global aviation leader.
The Boeing 777-9 is the world’s largest twin-engine airplane. Boeing designed it to deliver exceptional efficiency and performance, aligning with Cathay Pacific’s vision to modernize its fleet and meet rising travel demand.
The Boeing 777-9 stands out for its eco-friendly design. Compared to the aircraft it replaces, it cuts fuel consumption and emissions by an average of 20% and reduces noise by 40%.
These advancements allow Cathay Pacific to operate more sustainably while expanding its reach across key global markets.
The aircraft’s impressive range of 7,295 nautical miles (13,510 km) enables direct connections between Hong Kong and major long-haul destinations, offering passengers greater convenience and comfort.
Cathay’s Longstanding Relationship with Boeing
Ronald Lam, Cathay Group’s Chief Executive Officer, explained the importance of this order as part of the airline’s fleet upgrade program.
“The additional 777-9 aircraft will help us expand and modernize our fleet. It continues our legacy of connecting the world through our Hong Kong hub,” he said.

For over three decades, Cathay Pacific has relied on the Boeing 777 family to grow its global network. The 777-9, the latest model in this family. It offers enhanced efficiency, reducing operating costs as the airline expands its passenger and cargo operations. The aircraft will be employed on long- and ultra-long-haul routes.
This move supports Cathay Pacific’s goal of delivering a premium travel experience while maintaining operational excellence.

Global Interest in the Boeing 777-9
The 777-9 has garnered significant global interest, with over 550 orders placed worldwide. This demand sustains thousands of jobs at Boeing’s Everett, Washington facility and across its supply chain.
By investing in the 777-9, Cathay Pacific is not only modernizing its fleet but also setting a new standard for efficiency and passenger experience in the Asia-Pacific region.
On August 5, 2025, Boeing achieved a key milestone with the first flight of its fifth 777-9 test aircraft. This marked the resumption of flight testing after a nearly five-year pause since September 2020.
The 2-hour, 27-minute flight from Everett, Washington, tested the aircraft’s performance at 39,000 feet and Mach 0.84.
Despite past delays, including a 2024 grounding due to engine issues, this flight progresses Boeing’s certification timeline. The manufacturer is targeting deliveries by 2026, ensuring Cathay Pacific’s fleet modernization requirements are met.
