Boom Supersonic Completes Successful Flight of XB-1 Test Aircraft

Posted on March 28, 2024

Boom Supersonic, the company developing the world’s fastest airliner, Overture, has marked a historic achievement.

Their XB-1 demonstrator aircraft, the first independently developed supersonic jet ever, took to the skies above the Mojave Air & Space Port in California.

This milestone flight signifies a significant step towards reviving supersonic travel for passengers worldwide.

The XB-1’s flight path held particular significance. It soared through the same airspace that witnessed groundbreaking moments in aviation history, including the Bell X-1’s first breaking of the sound barrier in 1947.

Piloted by Boom’s Chief Test Pilot Bill “Doc” Shoemaker, the XB-1 successfully achieved all its test objectives. It reached a safe and controlled altitude of 7,120 feet while reaching speeds of up to 238 knots (273 mph).

“Everyone on the XB-1 team should be incredibly proud of this achievement,” remarked Bill “Doc” Shoemaker.

“The dedication and talent of this team have been instrumental in reaching this milestone. The experience gained will be invaluable as Boom leads the revival of supersonic travel.”

XB-1 Program Key Technologies

The XB-1 program serves as the foundation for Overture’s design and development. It also establishes a safety-focused culture within Boom’s engineering and manufacturing processes.

Here’s a closer look at some of the advanced technologies validated by the XB-1:

  • Augmented Reality Vision System: Two strategically placed nose-mounted cameras provide high resolution visuals for the pilot, enhanced with digital overlays displaying flight path and attitude information. This innovative system eliminates the need for a movable nose cone, reducing weight and complexity while maintaining exceptional runway visibility.
  • Digitally-Optimized Aerodynamics: Through the power of computational fluid dynamics simulations, Boom engineers explored countless design iterations for the XB-1. The resulting design achieves the perfect balance of safe and stable takeoff and landing characteristics with exceptional efficiency during supersonic flight.
  • Carbon Fiber Composites: XB-1’s light weight and robust structure is primarily built with carbon fiber composite materials. This allows for the realization of a sophisticated aerodynamic design.
  • Supersonic Intakes: These ingenious intakes efficiently slow down supersonic airflow to subsonic speeds. This conversion of kinetic energy into pressure energy enables conventional jet engines to power the XB-1 throughout its flight, from takeoff to supersonic cruising speeds.

Supersonic Future Takes Flight

The XB-1’s successful maiden voyage follows Overture’s ongoing progress towards production. Boom has secured a growing network of leading Tier 1 suppliers worldwide.

Additionally, their order book boasts 130 orders and pre orders from industry giants like American Airlines, United Airlines, and Japan Airlines.

Overture aims to revolutionize air travel by carrying 64-80 passengers at speeds above Mach 1.7, roughly twice as fast as today’s subsonic airliners.

Designed with a focus on speed, safety, and sustainability, Overture is poised to operate on 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

Summary

Boom is working with Northrop Grumman for government and defense applications of Overture. Several key suppliers and partners are working with Boom on the Overture program.

These include Aernnova, Aciturri, Collins Aerospace, Eaton, Honeywell, Latecoere, Leonardo, Safran Landing Systems, and the United States Air Force.

Symphony™ is the engine system that will power Overture, a Boom-developed engine.

This involves a collaboration with world class suppliers including Florida Turbine Technologies (FTT), a business unit of Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, Inc., GE Additive, and StandardAero.

XB-1 is Boom’s technology demonstrator aircraft and the world’s first independently developed supersonic jet.
