Airbus Predicts 43,240 New Commercial Aircraft Needed by 2044

Posted on June 16, 2025

As the Paris Air Show approaches, Airbus has unveiled its Global Market Forecast (GMF) for 2025, outlining a promising trajectory for the aviation industry.

Despite short-term challenges, the forecast predicts robust long-term growth in air travel. This will be driven by global economic trends, urbanization, and a rising middle class.

This article explores Airbus’ projections, emerging market trends, workforce demands, and sustainability efforts. It covers innovative technologies showcased at the Paris Air Show.

Steady Growth in Air Travel

Airbus anticipates passenger traffic will grow at an annual rate of 3.6% over the next 20 years. This growth stems from a global GDP increase of 2.5%. It sees the addition of 1.2 billion urban dwellers, and a 1.5 billion rise in the global middle class. These are key demographics for air travel.

To meet this demand, the industry will require approximately 43,400 new aircraft deliveries by 2044. This will include 34,250 single-aisle and 9,170 widebody aircraft.

Notably, 44% of these deliveries (18,930 aircraft) will replace older, less fuel-efficient models, supporting sustainability goals.

Aviation’s core strength lies in connecting people and fostering commerce, even during uncertain times.

Emerging markets are reshaping global air travel, with domestic traffic in India leading at 8.9% annual growth. This is followed by Asia-to-China routes at 8.5% and Middle East-to-Asia routes at 5.3%.

As passenger volumes rise, airlines are upsizing aircraft to meet demand. Airbus’ A320, A330, and A350 families offer a unique advantage here. They allow airlines to operate mixed fleets with crew members holding multi-type ratings, enhancing operational flexibility.

Workforce and Sustainability Opportunities

By 2044, the global in-service fleet is expected to double to over 49,000 aircraft, creating significant opportunities for pilots, technicians, cabin crews, and other aviation professionals.

The sector’s focus on sustainability will further drive demand for expertise in aircraft maintenance and efficient operations.

Airbus Customer Services is well-equipped to support this growth, offering advanced solutions like predictive maintenance to minimize disruptions and reduce fuel consumption.

The company also emphasizes supply chain efficiency, leveraging Used Serviceable Material (USM) to provide cost-effective spare parts and improve fleet availability.

Airbus is enhancing aircraft connectivity to boost operational efficiency and passenger experience while prioritizing recyclability to align with environmental goals. These efforts position Airbus as a leader in sustainable aviation solutions.

Decarbonizing Aviation

A key focus at the Air Lab is Airbus’ commitment to decarbonizing aviation. The company is exploring innovative propulsion technologies, including electrification, hybrid-powered flight, and hydrogen fuel cells.

In hybrid configurations, aircraft use multiple energy sources, optimizing efficiency and reducing fuel consumption by up to 5% compared to standard flights. These advancements reflect Airbus’ dedication to meeting the industry’s ambitious sustainability targets.

Conclusion

Airbus’ Global Market Forecast 2025 paints an optimistic picture of aviation’s future, with steady growth, emerging markets, and a doubling of the global fleet by 2044.

The forecast underscores the need for new aircraft, skilled professionals, and sustainable practices. At the Paris Air Show, Airbus is not only showcasing its innovative aircraft but also inviting visitors to explore transformative technologies through the Paris Air Lab.

By embracing digitalization, connectivity, and eco-friendly propulsion, Airbus is paving the way for a connected, sustainable, and exciting future in aviation.
