Air Algérie Places Major Order for 16 New ATR 72-600s

Posted on July 8, 2025

Air Algérie, Algeria’s national airline, has placed a landmark order for 16 ATR 72-600 regional aircraft.

This deal, the largest of its kind from an African operator in ATR’s history, also includes Africa’s first ATR 72-600 full-flight simulator, a significant step forward for regional aviation training.

Since 2003, Air Algérie has relied on ATR aircraft, operating 12 ATR 72-500s and three ATR 72-600s, with prior orders in 2008 and 2014.

Operations by Regional Subsidiary Domestic Airlines

This new acquisition highlights the airline’s trust in ATR’s advanced technology and fuel-efficient aircraft as it works to reduce its carbon footprint. The 16 new ATR 72-600s, powered by cutting-edge PW127XT engines, will be delivered between 2026 and 2028.

These 72-seat aircraft will be operated by Domestic Airlines, a new regional subsidiary of Air Algérie, focused on improving air links across the country. It operates particularly in underserved southern regions where air travel drives economic and social development.

The ATR 72-600 is ideally suited for Air Algérie’s mission to connect remote areas. Its ability to operate efficiently on short, low-density routes makes it a vital tool for fostering regional growth.

The aircraft’s fuel efficiency supports Air Algérie’s sustainability goals in reducing emissions. It will also maintain reliable performance in Algeria’s diverse and challenging environments.

Hamza Benhamouda, Air Algérie’s CEO, emphasized the aircraft’s role in the airline’s strategy. “The ATR 72-600 enables us to connect all regions of Algeria, supporting national development through efficient and reliable air transport.”

“Its fuel efficiency aligns with our commitment to sustainable operations,” he said.

The ATR 72-600’s versatility makes it a perfect fit for Algeria’s varied terrain and climate. Its ability to serve remote regions with lower passenger demand ensures that even isolated communities gain access to vital air links.

This will serve to foster economic opportunities and social cohesion.

Full-Flight Simulator

The addition of the ATR 72-600 full-flight simulator, to be installed at Air Algérie’s training center, will further strengthen the airline’s operations.

This state-of-the-art simulator will enhance pilot training, ensuring high standards of safety and maintenance.

By investing in both new aircraft and advanced training capabilities, Air Algérie is positioning itself as a leader in regional aviation across Africa.

ATR’s CEO, Nathalie Tarnaud Laude, hailed the order as a testament to the ATR 72-600’s capabilities. “This deal reflects the aircraft’s low operating costs, fuel efficiency, and reliability in demanding conditions,” she said.

“For over 20 years, Air Algérie has trusted ATR to connect communities and drive sustainable growth. We’re proud to support their new regional subsidiary and this exciting chapter in their development.”

This order solidifies ATR’s position as the preferred choice for regional connectivity worldwide.

About Air Algérie

As Algeria’s flag carrier, Air Algérie is fully owned by the Algerian state. It operates an extensive network across Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America.

With Algiers International Airport as its hub, the airline serves over 80 destinations. It operates around 230 daily flights across more than 200 routes.

In 2024, Air Algérie carried nearly 8 million passengers, supported by its own maintenance base, handling services, and subsidiaries. These include Air Algérie Catering, Air Algérie Cargo, and Amadeus Algérie. The airline is pursuing an ambitious fleet expansion to further strengthen its global and regional presence.

A Milestone for African Aviation

This historic order deepens the existing partnership between Air Algérie and ATR. Notably, it also marks a pivotal moment for African aviation.

The introduction of Africa’s first ATR 72-600 simulator and the launch of Domestic Airlines highlight Air Algérie’s commitment to operational excellence and regional connectivity.

As the airline expands its fleet and training capabilities, it is poised to play a leading role in shaping the future of sustainable, accessible air travel across the continent.
