American Airlines gains tentative approval for Tokyo flights

American Airlines has received tentative approval from the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) to inaugurate nonstop service between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND).

This development marks a significant milestone as American becomes the sole U.S. carrier to operate this route, enhancing connectivity between two major economic hubs.

New York to Tokyo

Robert Isom, CEO of American Airlines, was positive about the upcoming nonstop service, stating, “American looks forward to beginning nonstop service to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport from JFK. We are grateful to the DOT and thankful to our partner Japan Airlines for supporting our application.”

“Together, we are well-positioned to offer customers a comprehensive network between two of the most robust economies in the world.”

The approval from DOT allows American Airlines to introduce nearly 200,000 additional round-trip seats annually between the U.S. and Japan.

This expansion not only facilitates business endeavors in the global marketplace but also fosters connections with loved ones. With more nonstop flights to Tokyo, passengers can anticipate greater flexibility in planning their travels.

Strengthened Partnership with Japan Airlines

American’s collaboration with Japan Airlines further enhances the travel experience for passengers.

Molly Wilkinson, American’s Vice President of Regulatory and International Government Affairs, acknowledged the support received from various stakeholders, saying:

“American thanks the DOT for tentatively approving our application to operate the only nonstop U.S. carrier service between JFK and Haneda Airport.”

“We appreciate the strong bipartisan support from elected officials in New York, including U.S. Senate Majority Leader Schumer, U.S. Congressman Meeks, U.S. House Democratic Leader Jeffries, U.S. Congressman LaLota, U.S. Congressman D’Esposito, New York City Mayor Adams, Governor Hochul, New York State Assembly Speaker Heastie, New York State Senate Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins, and Queens Borough President Richards throughout the application process.”

The forthcoming JFK–HND service adds to American’s existing portfolio, which includes daily nonstop flights from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) and two daily flights from Los Angeles (LAX) to Tokyo Haneda Airport.

This strategic expansion reinforces American’s commitment to providing passengers with diverse flight options and convenient schedules.
