ANA Holdings, Inc. (ANAHD) has announced a landmark acquisition decision that will reshape its fleet and pave the way for significant growth in the coming years.
At a recent board of directors meeting, the airline giant revealed plans to order a staggering 77 new aircraft. The proposed $14 billion bulk order will see aircraft acquisitions from Airbus, Boeing and Embraer.
It signals a confident stride towards meeting anticipated passenger demand and bolstering ANA’s position in the global aviation market.
ANA Fleet Growth Plan
This strategic move is driven by a clear vision: sustainable growth fueled by technologically advanced, fuel-efficient aircraft. With a keen eye on the future, ANAHD is proactively addressing the resurgence of travel. It answers the robust inbound demand that is expected to continue its upward trajectory.
The new orders will facilitate the much-needed renewal of the fleet, a process that was temporarily paused during the COVID-19 pandemic. It will also add crucial capacity to allow for future expansion.
By 2030, ANAHD anticipates its total fleet to reach approximately 320 aircraft, including existing orders and the newly announced acquisitions.
Notably, around 120 of these will be from the Boeing 787 series. This pushes the ratio of fuel-efficient aircraft to an impressive 91%.
This commitment to modern, eco-friendly aircraft underscores ANAHD’s dedication to environmental sustainability, a critical factor in today’s aviation landscape.
International Ambitions a High Priority
For its flagship ANA-branded international routes, the company is placing a significant emphasis on meeting the burgeoning demand between Asia and North America.
To capitalize on the re-expansion of Narita International Airport, ANAHD will acquire 18 Boeing 787-9 aircraft, powered by GE engines.
This injection of new aircraft will serve as the cornerstone for sustainable growth in the international sector. This remains a key growth area for the airline.
The airline projects a remarkable 1.5-fold increase in available seat kilometers (ASK) on international routes by 2030 compared to 2023. This highlights the importance of the group’s international network.

Domestic Routes: Efficiency and Flexibility
On the domestic front, ANAHD is demonstrating its adaptability by introducing 20 Embraer E190-E2 aircraft. This is a 100-seat class jet, and it marks a first for Japan. This strategic move is designed to navigate the evolving domestic business environment.
The E190-E2, with its cutting-edge engines and technologies, promises to deliver low fuel consumption and reduced noise emissions, while also lowering operating costs.
This aircraft will allow for a more flexible supply-demand balance on domestic routes, ensuring efficient operations over the medium to long term. The introduction of these aircraft is slated for fiscal year 2028.

Fleet Modernization Across the Board
In addition to these major orders, ANAHD will further modernize its fleet with 14 additional Airbus A321neo aircraft and 12 Boeing 737-8 aircraft, reinforcing its commitment to fleet renewal.
Low-cost carrier Peach will also see significant updates, with 10 Airbus A321neo aircraft and 3 Airbus A321XLR aircraft, known for their superior fuel efficiency and extended range, being added to its fleet.
Furthermore, ANAHD has finalized options for 5 Boeing 787-9 aircraft and 10 Boeing 737-8 aircraft, previously announced in 2020 and 2019, respectively, solidifying its long-term fleet strategy.
Looking Ahead
This comprehensive aircraft order reflects ANA Group’s dual focus: expanding its international footprint and optimizing domestic operations. By prioritizing safety, enhancing customer service, and driving profitability with a keen awareness of capital costs, ANAHD aims to exceed shareholder expectations.
Koji Shibata, President and CEO of ANA Holdings, emphasizes the strategic importance of this order. “This order will be the catalyst for improving the profitability of domestic flights and the expansion of international flights which is an area of future growth of our airline business.”
“We will fully utilize this opportunity in order to become an industry-leading airline with sustainable growth.”
In essence, ANAHD’s bold investment in its fleet signals a confident leap into the future. It promises enhanced connectivity, and a strengthened position in the competitive global aviation market.
