Boom Supersonic achieved a historic milestone as its XB-1 demonstrator aircraft completed its first supersonic flight at California’s Mojave Air & Space Port.
This breakthrough marks the first independently developed supersonic jet in aviation history and the first American-made civil supersonic aircraft. With the sound barrier broken on 28 January 2025 at 8:31am PST, Boom makes a significant leap forward in commercial aviation technology.
Supersonic Flight: Mach 1.1
During the test flight, Chief Test Pilot Tristan “Geppetto” Brandenburg took the XB-1 to an altitude of 35,290 feet, reaching Mach 1.122 (750 mph). This remarkable achievement stands out in aviation history because, until now, only government-backed projects with massive resources had successfully developed and flown supersonic aircraft.

Boom Supersonic XB-1 Test Program to Date
XB-1 showcases several innovative features that will appear in the Overture airliner. This includes advanced carbon fiber construction, enhanced digital stability systems, and a sophisticated augmented reality landing system.
These technologies represent significant improvements over previous supersonic aircraft designs, offering greater efficiency and safety.
Since its inaugural flight in March 2024, the aircraft completed 11 carefully planned test flights under increasingly challenging conditions.
The comprehensive test program gradually expanded flight capabilities from subsonic through supersonic speeds, maintaining strict safety protocols throughout. This methodical approach enabled the team to gather crucial data while ensuring maximum safety.

Preparing for Overture
The XB-1 program validates several crucial technologies for Boom Supersonic’s Overture, each representing significant advances in aviation technology. The augmented reality vision system ingeniously solves visibility challenges during takeoff and landing. This offers a more efficient and lightweight solution than Concorde’s mechanical nose design.
Advanced computational fluid dynamics simulations helped engineers create an optimized aerodynamic design. The aircraft performs safely during all flight phases while maximizing supersonic efficiency.
The extensive use of carbon fiber composites throughout both aircraft creates an unprecedented combination of structural strength and lightweight design. Specialized engine intakes efficiently manage airflow from takeoff through supersonic speeds, directly informing the development of Overture’s innovative Symphony engine system.
From 1947 to 2025
The historic flight took place in the same airspace where Chuck Yeager first broke the sound barrier in 1947. It becomes the first civil supersonic flight since Concorde’s retirement two decades ago. This achievement now paves the way for Overture’s commercial service. The Boom Supersonic Overture airliner will carry 64-80 passengers at Mach 1.7 – twice current airliner speeds – serving over 600 routes globally, potentially transforming international travel.
Overture Orders to Date
Overture has secured 130 orders and pre-orders from major carriers including American Airlines, United Airlines, and Japan Airlines, demonstrating strong market confidence in supersonic travel’s return.
Boom Supersonic’s new Overture Superfactory in Greensboro, North Carolina, completed in 2024, will produce up to 66 aircraft annually at full capacity.
The aircraft and its Symphony propulsion system are designed to balance speed, safety, and sustainability, capable of operating on 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This serves to position Boom Supersonic at the forefront of both high-speed travel and environmental responsibility in aviation.
