On July 10, SunExpress announced that they have completed the first phase of using VCT Finlets on their Boeing 737-800s.
This article will cover the details of SunExpress adopting VCT’s Finlet technology to further reduce its carbon emissions.
SunExpress VCT Finlets
SunExpress and Vortex Control Technologies (VCT) have announced that the Turkish carrier has become the European launch customer for their Finlet technology. This has been adopted on so far, five of the carrier’s Boeing 737-800 Next Generation aircraft.
VCT Finlets are a patented array of small “fins”. They are placed on the aircraft’s rear fuselage which modify airflow and reduce drag. This helps to decrease fuel consumption and carbon emissions while enhancing an aircraft’s range, climb performance and endurance.
The five aircraft that have had this applied complete phase one of this venture. They have been in service since May 2024. Phase two will then see up to an additional 25 aircraft have VCT Finlets applied.
The use of these VCT Finlets will see SunExpress’ carbon footprint reduce by six million kilograms of CO2 per year.

Adding to Sayar’s comments, VCT’s Chief Executive Officer, Gil Morgan, says. “The certification of Finlets on the 737-700, 800 and 900ER is the culmination of over a decade long design effort involving wind tunnel testing, computational fluid dynamics, and comprehensive U.S. Air Force and FAA flight tests on the C-130, C-17 and 737NG aircraft.”
